Sustainable Societies Great Plains
Human Settlements
Many cities and towns in the Great Plains historically grew up as centers for transportation of agricultural products. As larger cities have developed and become integrated into the world economy, the balance between urban and rural interests has shifted. While the largest cities in the region are experiencing rapid growth, often taking over adjoining agricultural land in the process, smaller cities and towns suffer from many of the same economic pressures as rural communities, and seek ways to revitalize economic growth.
