William R. Godfrey
President and Director of Programs
As President of EFI, Bill Godfrey has focused the foundation on identifying social, economic and environmental sustainability issues and then designing educational programs that develop peoples’ abilities to tackle those challenges and create solutions. Mr. Godfrey was the lead author of Sustainable Societies in Africa: Modules on Education for Sustainable Development, an internationally peer-reviewed education program developed in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme to mainstream environment and sustainability understanding and build the capacity of African universities and their students to address the continent’s Millennium Development Goals. He directs development of EFI’s regional sustainability education materials, including those for the American Great Plains and Mid-Atlantic states, and works with colleges and universities as they define and build their sustainable education programs. Mr. Godfrey has presented and conducted workshops at colleges and universities, and national and international conferences and summits to such varied audiences as the National Universities Commission of Nigeria and the World Bank.
Trained in the liberal arts, architecture and environmental science, Mr. Godfrey has project experience in North America, the Middle East, the Pacific Basin, Pacific Rim, Africa and the Caribbean. His experience leveraging innovative thinking, bringing diverse stakeholders together and developing implementable solutions have won commendations from the United Nations Economic, Social and Cultural Organization, the African Association of Universities, the South African Development Commission, and the United Nations University/Global Virtual University. As an architect before coming to EFI, his design projects ranged from coastal lagoons to new cities in China and Saudi Arabia, winning awards for planning, programming, architecture and engineering from the American Institute of Architects, American Civil Engineers Council, United States General Services Administration and Department of Defense.
